microreflection

i think that the most important insight that i learned in class is about critical thinking. i guess its important to have good critical thinking skills. in class we also learned about how there must be a legitimate argument and solution to a problem. these are good things to know about.

then and now

the subject of my study is a 41 year old female named cassie. she remembers 1994, she was 24 years old and lived in michigan.

these are her memories: OJ simpson
                                    Kurt Cobain
                                    Pulp Fiction
                                    Bill Clinton- President
                                    Jerry Springer

Cassie remembers watching OJ Simpson in his police chase after he was accused of murdering his wife Nicole Brown Simpson. OJ was an NFL player and she remembers that he was aquitted of all charges. She also remembers when Kurt Cobain committed suicide. she says that there was alot of scandal involving his wife Courtney, they said that he couldnt have shot himself! "it was a great tragedy, he was the father of grunge." Her favorite movie at the time was Pulp Fiction, she said it was the best movie ever! it was the introduction to Quentin Tarantino movie trend. "gotta love Tarantino!!!" Cassie remembers that Bill Clinton was president, and that he turned our economy around for the better. also, the scandal of Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky. she said it was scandalous and entertaining. Finally, her favorite tv show of the time was Jerry Springer. "Drama, fights, stupidity, inbreeding and mindless self indulgence." The OJ Simpson event was "pop culture" because everyone payed attention to it, and it became a joke to talk about the white bronco. Kurt Cobain was pop culture because he started the grunge movement, and alot of people were into nirvana, his music is still on the radio. Pulp Fiction is still a great movie, its called a cult classic so people still watch this movie. Bill Clinton was on Saturday Night Live for a long time. That was pop culture because lots of people watched the news on his scandal and also watched SNL. Jerry Springer was and is pop culture. He takes the scum of society and turned it into entertainment, and his show is still on tv so we still see it in pop culture.

as for my own pop culture interests in 2012, im 24 years old: facebook
                                                                                            the twilight books
                                                                                            first black president
                                                                                            the wonderpets
                                                                                            sublime
I enjoyed reading the twilight books. theres something about these stories suck me in. i dont know what it is but I enjoyed them more than i expected to. So why are these books pop culture? Because they showed up at Barnes & Noble, everyone buys them, and all of a sudden, its everywhere! thats pop culture. I am totally addicted to facebook. i cant seem to go any amount of time with out checking it! Facebook is an important part of pop culture today. Social networking is in everyones life in one way or another. its always on your mind and i think thats why its so big in our pop culture. there will always be some form of social networking whether its facebook or the next big social networking sight.  Barack Obama is the first black president, boy did he screw that up! i think that America was not ready for a black president, especially not the one that we elected, sadly, i did vote for him. This is pop culture because its constantly yet subtly in your face. Barack Obama is on bumper stickers, tv shows, billboards etc. i think that pop culture is something that is in your everyday life.  The tv show that i watch the most is the wonderpets, i have a 2 year old daughter so we watch this show all the time on netflix. I guess that watching a show on netflix is its own form of pop culture some how, the Wonderpets and netflix will be on VH1's top of the 2000's sometime. my favorite band is sublime, i know that they arent current but i really dont like the way that music has gone in the past few years. Obviously sublime is and always will be pop culture because the lead singer Bradley died along time ago and there music is still popular. People still buy there music from itunes and there cds on Amazon so clearly they are still popular and in peoples life.

fads and trends

fads

Twilight:

I chose twilight as a fad because it won't be popular forever. All of a sudden, every female under the age of 30 has seen this movie, where people are pretending to be vampires. If this movie were about a human and a zombie that fell in love would the reaction be the same? I think it would, too bad it is not, I would rather see people pretending that they're zombies rather than vampires. I believe this fad is only temporary because it seems that another movie will come out that will completely captivate the teenage audience. Although these movies will probably stay classic forever, the popularity will fade, and we will all just remember it "fondly".

Harry Potter

Harry Potter is totally a fag, (whoops!) I meant FAD.  Seriously people!?  Do you really think you look cool, waving around your "authentic" Potter wand and saying "silly spells?"  No, you don't, but we've seen this before haven't we?  Yes, when people were (and are) pretending they were characters from Star Trek.  The last movie has just been released, the craziness is already dying down and Harry Potter is on his way out., even though the Potter movies will always be an important part of pop culture, just like the Twilight series, these movies will fade into the nexus along with other awesome movies.

Teen Mom

Why are we praising these girls?  Is getting pregnant at 16 something to celebrate? I should hope not, but here we are rewarding these girls for having babies at such a young age.  This is something that should not be glorified.  This fad will soon go away, I hope, with any luck, this T.V. show and the phenomena of teen pregnancy will end.  This is a serious issue that doesn't need to be glorified by creating a T.V. show, making these girls into stars because they got knocked up at a young age is morally wrong.

Your Momma

Oh my god!  I thought this little fad died way back in the '90's, apparently I was wrong.  Your mama jokes are still kicking, apparently, but I do believe we're at the end of this little fad.  It had a good run, but now it's time to put it to bed. Yo Mama Goes to Bed. Sorry, I couldn't help it.  Fad, it's all just a fad.

Jersey Shore

Ah yes, another reality show, they'll make a show about anything.  I actually have never watched this show, so that being said, I don't know much about it.  I can tell you that this is definitely a fad, these people can only do so much drinking and partying, it's sure to get boring soon.  Yet another group of people who shouldn't be glorified for their partying.  I think this is a fad because America seems to be obsessed with the reality  T.V. show, eventually we will become bored with this fad.

TRENDS

Smart Phones

These newfangled Smart Phones are definitely a trend.  A couple of years ago no one had heard of a Smart Phone, and now they are becoming an everyday thing.  We rely on these devices way too much, I know I do at least.  But, this is most definitely a trend, we have been into our personal communication devices for far too long for it to end.  As i said this is a trend, because there will always be a form of personal communication device whether it's hand held, or a chip in our head.

Disney Movies

Can you say trend?  Disney is forever, enough said.  The Disney movies, although trends, feed off of the fads. For example, back in the day, the movies were always about the princess being saved by the prince now they are gender friendly.  The princess' don't need to be saved anymore, they save themselves.  This is a trend, Disney has always been here and it will always be here.

Facebook

Not an hour goes by when I don't check my Facebook.  I'm sure I'm not the only one. This trend took the place of an old fave, Myspace, remember Myspace?  That was a trend as well. There will be something after Facebook, social websites will continue to evolve.  They stem from social groups and bulletin boards announcing meetings and people getting together to discuss important events, just as the water cooler that started it all!

Portable Computers
These portable computers will always be around, maybe in a slightly different form, but nevertheless, they will always be here.  We use them for school, work as well as personal use.  These chunks of plastic, metal and wires have changed the world as we know it today.  The more high tech they become the smaller they get.  There will be a new wave of technology, but the laptop will still be here, in some form or another.

Teenage Literature

This trend will never die, kinda like Edward.  There is a certain drama involved in these books, teenagers take them so seriously.  They feel what's happening in the story, it's actually a good thing, teenagers are reading!  *gasp*  Maybe we can put some useful anecdotes in these books, teach them some real life lessons.http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/la-caw-wordplay14-2008dec14,0,7447100.story

reading quest 2

i would like to discuss the strawberry jam experiment in class
on the reading quest 1, my question was how does the football player make those super fast decisions? i believe i completed this quest, but apparently not. so im just gonna say that the football player is smart. he took a test similar to the iq test and scored higher than a 16. this means that he has the ability to make split second decisons rationally.

twitter tweets

so my twitter name is myriah  @missmyriah87  i think i did this right! so tweet it up my little tweeters!
